A year of AI: what 2024 taught us

12 December 2024 Β· Lumen MSP

If 2023 was the year AI grabbed the headlines, 2024 was the year it became part of everyday software β€” woven into Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, built into our phones, and embedded in countless business tools. From GPT-4o to Copilot’s SME launch and Apple Intelligence, the theme was AI arriving where people already work.

The big lesson is that you no longer have to seek AI out; it’s turning up in the products you already use. That makes thoughtful adoption β€” clear policies, good data hygiene and sensible guardrails β€” more important than chasing the newest model.

Why this matters

  • AI went mainstream β€” it’s now embedded in everyday tools, not a separate destination.
  • Adoption beats acquisition β€” using AI well matters more than owning the latest model.
  • Data hygiene is foundational β€” AI amplifies whatever state your data is in.
  • Governance is the differentiator β€” clear policies turn AI from risk into advantage.

What we’d advise

Pick a handful of high-value, low-risk uses, protect your data, and build from there. Steady beats flashy every time β€” and we’re here to help you choose where AI genuinely earns its place.
