What Cyber Essentials covers

There are two levels:
- Cyber Essentials is a self-assessment, verified against the NCSC’s requirements. It’s affordable, achievable for even the smallest team, and a solid first step.
- Cyber Essentials Plus adds hands-on technical verification — an assessor independently tests your systems rather than taking your word for it. It carries more weight with clients and insurers, and it’s often the level larger customers want to see.
For many businesses the right path is to certify at the base level first, then move up to Plus as part of a wider security plan.

A badge earned by ticking boxes — without genuinely fixing the underlying gaps — gives false confidence and won’t stop an attack.
